5 key ingredients in pet food for pet's good health

Pet food requirements are greatly misunderstood worldwide. Just because we can eat anything in any amount, we expect our pets to be the same way. This might not have any immediate effect on your pet’s health. But in the long run, your little friend would get sick and face nutrient deficiencies or abundance like high sugar levels which leads to diabetes in pets like dogs.

To ensure your pet’s optimum health, the nutrient quality and quantity in pet food need to be optimized.

1. Meat and non-meat protein

The type of protein a pet needs depends on its breed and category of habitat. The pets from terrestrial areas can thrive both on meat and non-meat protein source. For dogs, it can be all kinds of muscle from some animal’s body. For cats, the meat can be fresh and bloody or a bit processed depending on its eating habits.

Herbivorous and aquatic pets thrive more on non-meat protein sources. For example, farm animals might eat nuts and whole-grain for protein while fish prefers aquatic alga such as spirulina as a major protein source.

2. Complex carbohydrates

Feeding your pet cookies and rolls frequently is a huge mistake and sadly this is what most of us do. The refined carbs not only spike sugar levels but also gets your pet low energy that is easily absorbed in the blood and flushed through urine. On the other hand, complex carbs take time to absorb into the bloodstream as they have dietary fiber that prevents rapid absorption.

Complex carbohydrates are excellent in keeping your pet full for a long time which also going to cost you less on pet food. Carbs are the second abundant source of energy for pet food after protein.

3. Saturated fats

These fats might be needed in lesser amounts or only during winters when the fat layer would help in fighting the cold weather. For cattle or other farm animals living on hills or cold areas where snowfall occurs, saturated fats in their diet are very helpful.

4. Unsaturated fats

Also called omega 3 fatty acids, unsaturated fats are required by all animals. Fish food is loaded with such fats because the chemical composition of aquatic animals involves a larger percentage of unsaturated fat like terrestrial animals mostly need glucose in abundance.

Though in terrestrial animals, puppies and kittens need omega 3 as a necessary ingredient for basic growth of body parts such as bone strength, nail, and fur growth, etc.

5. Micronutrients

These are not required in abundance but their lack can cause serious malfunctions in both terrestrial and aquatic animals. Therefore, Pet Food companies make sure that micronutrients such as iron, zinc, folic acid, riboflavin, and multivitamins are added to the packaged meal.

The percentage of micronutrients can vary in foods depending on the nature of the pet. Also, it’s up to the pet’s stage of life too. A pregnant cat might need more iron than a normal one or a kitten might need more vitamin C to build collagen during the initial stages of development.
